English spring spaniel was bred, in the 14th century in Great Britain in the shire of Norfolk, from a Field Spaniel. At first this dog was used for tracking and herding of wild animals while hunting with falcons, later it was used for fetching. This dog is able to bring a large rabbit or a fox in his mouth. A standard was accepted in Great Britain in 1907. Besides Great Britain are these dogs bred in the USA, Canada, France, Poland, Sweden, and Estonia.
English Spring Spaniel is a hunting breed. It is a beautiful, strong, active, and tireless dog with a compact build. The head and nose are fairly wide. The eyes are mid size, oval, and of a dark brown color. The chest is deep. The tail is covered with thick fur, it is held on the level of the back or lower, it used to be cropped.
Hunting use
English Spring Spaniel belongs to the group of trackers. So it is lead to systematically search a given area, find an animal and uncover it. While hunting it is used for tracking and fetching small animals. At water works it is able to track and pick up the feathered; it will track down the shot animal and fetch it. Thanks to its excellent inbred hunting qualities and a great nose it can be used for tracing and pursuance instead of a scent hound. It can also easily be used for chasing wild boar. So it is a very versatile dog for hunters.
Exhibitions
English Spring Spaniel is a beautiful hound with a thick fur and that is why we keep seeing it more and more often in the show circles. Preparation for exhibitions is especially difficult when it comes to hair care, but experienced experts will give you all the necessary advices.
